LG Arts Center is located in the heart of Kangnam
business district, making an architectural contribution to the conventional
high-rise building community. LG Arts Center's free cross section, as opposed
to a box-type cross section, contributes to a variety of Seoul City's
appearance.
Though the site given to LG Arts Center was extremely limited, the Center, as a
performing arts venue, should contain all necessary spaces, both functional
spaces and public spaces. After a series of feasibility studies, it was
determined that the audience spaces and performance spaces should be maximized,
while the performance support spaces be minimized, creating "a volume within a
volume," which became the basic concept for the design. Other performance
support spaces 3/4 offices, dressing rooms locker room, etc. 3/4 were planned
in the adjacent GS Tower, on the 5th floor, the same level as the stage. The
rehearsal room used for pre-performance exercises was designed on the B2 level
of the GS Tower.

The
exterior walls of the LG Arts Center used glass, green granite and stainless
steel as the finish materials, in consideration of the visual linkage with the
neighboring GS Tower building.
The choice of exterior finish materials could be explained as "an outer
expression of the inner function." For the most mechanical as well as most
functional spaces, stainless steel was used for the exterior wall finish, with
an implication of the material's coldness and preciseness. On the other hand, a
combination of glass and granite was applied on the exterior walls that
surround the public spaces, implying a sense of lightness and openness.

The
design of the interior wall finish takes as the basic concept the visual
elements perceived from the curved surfaces of the exterior walls. The free and
dynamic, curved yet horizontal lines and planes were repeated on the interior
walls, and again variedly repeated in the audience chamber, thus reflecting the
rhythmically dynamic image of an art-performing space upon its design.

The Main
Lobby features a waved ceiling, an architectural application of the floor slope
of the audience chamber in the upper level. This design element emphasizes the
dynamic force and creates a visual illusion. It will also provide the audience
with visual pleasure and curiosity.
Another point of interest is found around the Grand Stairs that connect the
Main Lobby with the main level audience chamber. The large-scale glass stairs
are raised over a double-leveled pond. The soft light from the ceiling is
reflected upon the surface of the water, projecting the movement of ripples
through the glass treads. Those who are on the stairs will stop for a while,
and listen to the music of the falling water.

The
auditorium lobby is reached either by the stairs or escalators from the Main
Lobby. The floor and walls are finished with a brownish tone, and the ceiling
is painted in a gold color. The entrance, which needs to be easily identified,
is given a royal blue color.

The side
walls of the audience chamber are finished with transondent fabric and wood
mould, carefully designed for acoustic purposes. Sound-reflective hard wood
panels are applied on the rear wall. Audience chairs are made of thin cushions
in the royal blue color and thick wooden backs in dark brown, in harmony with
the atmosphere of the entire hall space.
