A dreamlike work of ballet for families and lovers alike
Scottish Ballet is one of
the four leading ballet companies of the United Kingdom, alongside the Royal
Ballet, English National Ballet, and Bermingham Royal Ballet. The company is
coming to Korea with their adaptation of Grimm Brother’s <Hansel and Gretel>.
Established in 1959, Scottish Ballet boasts its artistic trajectory of
60-years, continuously presenting monumental works of innovative choreographers
of our time, stretching from classical tradition to contemporary artworks. They
are returning to Korea in 26 years, since their last visit in 1992 accompanying
Prince Charles and Princess Diana.
<Hansel and Gretel>
is based on Engelberg Humperdinck’s opera of the same title, layered with the
sensuous, yet witty choreography of Christopher Hampson, the artistic director
of the ballet company. Through the combination of an enticingly modern
adaptation, dazzling stage art, and the magical ensemble of the Scottish Ballet
based on robust skills, the work will transform a seemingly familiar story into
a completely new and mystical surprise.
Children are vanishing from
the village. Stuck at home under strict protection of their parents, Hansel and
Gretel are fidgeting with boredom. Finally, they decide to run away to look for
their missing friends. In front of them awaits an exciting adventure and
colorful and achingly-sweet gingerbread house, a mysterious fairy, frightful
crows, and sparkling star sands pop out on stage like a gift box. A magical
treat flowing with joy, surprise, and beauty, <Hansel and Gretel> will
invite you to an abundance of joy and happiness.
