“Antonio Sanchez is one of the most respected drummers working today. Sanchez transcends genre with the ability to literally play and adapt to any situation with virtually any ensemble.” - Critical Jazz
Boasting a full-fledged musical talent as the drummer of Pat Metheny Group as well as the composer of the film “Birdman”, Antonio Sanchez is one of the most prominent jazz drummers alive. He will be visiting Korea to present two special performances.
Antonio Sanchez started his career as a member of Dizzy Gillespie's United Nations Orchestra and Danilo Perez Acoustic Trio and rose to stardom after joining the world-class guitarist Pat Metheny’s group as a drummer. As a member of the group, he recorded 8 albums, out of which 3 won the Grammy Award. His reputation grew even further through collaborations with major jazz musicians around the world, including Chick Corea, Joshua Redman, Charlie Haden, and Dianne Reeves. In 2007, he released his first solo album “Migration”, which was immediately praised as “the best debut album”(All About Jazz). His compositional and band-leading talents started to be recognized. He then formed the band ‘Migration’ consisting of leading musicians, Seamus Blake(Saxophone), Thana Alexa(Vocal), John Escreet(Piano), and Matt Brewer(Bass) and has been actively expanding his musical horizon ever since.
He participated in the original soundtrack of film “Birdman”, which won the ‘Best-Picture’ Academy Award in 2015, gaining prominence among film fans around the world. His drum scores tapping on to the audience’s heartbeat throughout the film propelled the story forward and received rave reviews from the audience and critics. Sanchez finally won the ‘Best Soundtrack’ at the Grammy Award.
This performance will be an opportunity to experience everything about Antonio Sanchez currently at his musical prime. Together with his band ‘Migration’, he will present his iridescent and extensive artistic spectrum, mainly focusing on his most recent album “The Meridian Suite”. In the ‘The Birdman Experience’, he will tell us the story behind the composition and working process of “Birdman” and play the music himself.
