  • The final chance to meet the ultimate masterpiece of Ivo van Hove

Ivo Van Hove has been receiving fervent support from the Korean audience through his presentations of Opening Night in 2012, The Fountainhead in 2017 and the NT Live of A View from Bridge. Even after rising to the level of world’s top theater directors, he continues to take audacious steps, releasing a number of highly innovative works. Roman Tragedies clearly marks the culmination of such endeavors, for which the tour will come to an end after its final stage at LG Arts Center in November 2019.

Premiered in 2007, Roman Tragedies is a work conceived after Shakespeare’s three plays, Coriolanus, The Tragedy of Julius Caesar, and Antony and Cleopatra, all set in the Roman Empire. Coriolanus, the hero who saved Rome but became an enemy of the people due to his arrogance and obstinacy; Julius Caesar, who came into power through the ardent support of the people and is then taken down by those who fear that he will threaten the republic and become a dictator; Antony and Cleopatra, two lovers torn between the pressing situation of Rome and Egypt and the fatal love that can determine the destiny of the country, agonizing between public responsibility and personal fervor; the tragic stories of these Roman characters unfold in an epic scale, as modern and bold as ever.

Roman Tragedies will run for 5 hours and 30 minutes without intermission. Instead of remaining seated in designated seats, audiences are allowed to freely move around between the auditorium and the stage that resembles a lobby lounge at certain moments and choose to watch the show in desired locations. The large screen on the stage dramatically capture the characters’ situation from a different angle, and the messages on the display board arouse tension by warning the approaching convulsion like a news flash. Throughout 5 hours and 30 minutes, audiences vividly witness a raging series of events and the course of history quickly circling the drain of catastrophe. They are invited to jump into this incessant, absorbing political games between the Roman characters who are there as if living the 21st century. Roman Tragedies is a work that can be watched in a most democratic atmosphere, a work that takes the most innovative form of viewing and eliminates any preconceived ideas. It will undoubtedly be one of the best theatrical encounters one can wish for in life as well as an overwhelming artistic experience.
